O.E. PP UV Protected Yarn for Outdoor Applications
mmp's O.E. PP UV Protected Technical Yarn is meant for outdoor and technical textiles that spend a lot of time in the sun. Plain polypropylene doesn’t cope well with sunlight over long periods. It gradually weakens and starts to break down. To slow this, UV stabilisers are added to the yarn whenever better outdoor performance is needed.
This open-end polypropylene yarn is spun in counts from 2.0s Ne to 5.0s Ne and suits many outdoor fabrics. The amount of UV resistance it offers depends on its formulation, the stabiliser used, how harsh the sun exposure is, and the specs that back it up.

Plain polypropylene doesn’t cope well with sunlight over long periods. It slowly weakens, turns brittle, and starts to break down. UV stabilisers are added to slow this process, and that’s what sets this open-end polypropylene yarn apart from standard PP yarn. It’s made for fabrics that stay out in direct sun for months, sometimes years.
Not all stabilisers perform the same way, though. How much UV resistance the yarn offers depends on its formulation, the stabiliser used, and how harsh the sun exposure is. For UV stabilized polypropylene yarn, it’s worth asking which stabiliser is in it and checking the test results. Heavy fabrics usually call for the coarser counts in the 2.0s Ne to 5.0s Ne range.
- Open-end spun from polypropylene
- UV stabilisers added for better outdoor performance
- Slows the weakening that sunlight causes in plain PP
- Made for long periods of sun exposure
- UV performance backed by test data and specifications
- Counts from 2.0s Ne to 5.0s Ne, with coarser counts suited to heavy fabrics
As a UV-protected polypropylene yarn, mmp’s O.E. PP UV Protected Technical Yarn can be used for:
- Outdoor technical textiles: for fabrics that spend most of their working life outside, in full sun.
- Tarpaulins and covers: compare a tarpaulin left out all year in Rajasthan with one that only comes out for the monsoon. The year-round one asks a lot more of its yarn, simply because of the extra hours in the sun.
- Long-life outdoor products: items expected to last several years rather than one season, where yarn formulation and fabric design both count.
- Other sun-exposed applications: shade nets, outdoor sacks, garden covers, or any product that lives outside most of the year. Try a small run on your own machines first, and you’ll know soon enough if it suits.
